Dawn of a new generation
From the very first moment I started Horizon Zero Dawn, I was impressed. This game looks absolutely stunning. Guerilla Games did an amazing job with this PlayStation exclusive. Just look at it and you can do nothing but agree, right? A dense world, gorgeous vista’s, beautiful characters and colourful lighting effects make this one of the best looking games of the current console generation, even compared to Uncharted 4. And that means something …
The main protagonist of this game is Aloy. A young woman that’s looking for her place in a post apocalyptic world overrun by machines. The combination of science fiction with a primitive aspect is the base for a very unique setting. Suffice to say Guerilla really succeeded in creating a vast, diverse and believable world. One that will keep you hooked once you set your first foot in.
“everything is executed in such a picture perfect way we don’t often see in video games”
Behind the graphics and immersive world is one of the best third person action RPG’s I’ve ever played. Not that this game’s super original or features completely new game mechanics. But everything is executed in such a picture perfect way we don’t often see in video games these days. Questing and losing yourself in a big open world never felt so good. Or if you want you can go explore, discovering something new behind each corner. When running through the landscape you’ll encounter some dangers though. More then once you’ll cross paths with huge robotic beasts that could take you out in a mere couple of hits.
To gather resources you’ll have no other choice than to engage. In this situation planning and precision are key. You’ll soon feel like a real hunter, but it’s not easy. Luckily for you, Aloy found a nice little help on her journey. Her focus. This little thing for instance, let’s you visualise the moving patterns of the different creatures. It’s even possible to expose the different weaknesses of the robotic animals, making it easier going for the kill.
“thanks to the fluid and responsive controls this will almost immediately feel second nature”
Hunting is a big part of the game. You’ve got to be in your approach. Move slow and steady. This all changes the moment you’ve made your first strike or get noticed by one of the machines. From that moment on the game shifts a couple of gears higher. In this new situation you’ll have to rely on your reflexes. But thanks to the fluid and responsive controls this will almost immediately feel second nature. Bringing down a huge metallic critter feels satisfying for sure. Horizon Zero Dawn is an absolute blast to play!
Once the beast is down you can loot it for item drops. These items can be later sold at a vendor, or used to upgrade your gear. This ranges from different types of ammo, stronger armour to traps, … you name it. There are so many options that fit to whatever is your play style, or complements your chosen path in the different skill trees. This system may not be as deep as your typical RPG, but even if you are a fanatic you won’t be disappointed.
“Guerilla set a new standard on open world RPG’s and created perhaps the best new franchise of the current generation”
Wrapping this up, I can definitely say this game is a must have for everyone who owns a PlayStation 4. Even if you are a gamer on a budget this is a no brainer. Buy this game, and I’m sure you won’t regret it! Guerilla set a new standard on open world RPG’s and created perhaps the best new franchise of the current generation. If you haven’t done in already, buy now, and add this game to your collection!
