The parenting gamer

Yes, I’m a gamer. And yes, I am a dad! A combination that does not always seems to be that easy…

Three months ago I became the father of my baby girl, one of the most beautiful days of my life. A lot has changed since then on a personal level. Besides the responsibility me and my girlfriend have for our little one and the influence this has on our relationship, perhaps one of the biggest adjustments is how I spend my free time … If I have any left at all …

A coupe of years ago, and to a lesser extend still today, I considered myself hard-core. Playing Quake 3, Red Alert 2, Counter-Strike and World of Warcraft I have spent a lot of my free time in the virtual world. And that’s even without mentioning my other virtual career on console playing WipeOut, Tekken, FIFA and Gran Turismo. When I come to think about it now, it looks like back then I had way too much time on my hand …

This certainly has changed. These days my free time is way more sparse so I have to play my games more efficiently, not to mention that when I’m actually gaming there could always be a little one craving for a hug … or a diaper change … which I gladly obey!

Sometimes however, this change happens to be a struggle from a hobby point of view. I’ve been dying to throw myself at The Witcher 3, but with an average playtime of 200 hours this doesn’t seem doable at all. And then I’m not even talking about Fallout 4, Bloodborne or Metal Gear Solid 5. I even want to try the new and promising MMORPG called Black Desert Online …

Guess I’ll have to put all these games on my ever growing to do list and focus my attention on what I call “short burst” games for which my Vita happens to be an ideal platform. But then again, when my little one looks and smiles at me it’s one of the best feelings in the world. And that is something no game can beat!
